Central Tokyo area was center of Japanese politics in the Edo period (1600-1868). Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868.
As the center of the world's third largest economy, Tokyo occupies a large position not only in the Japanese economy but also in the world economy. Tokyo produces about 93 trillion Japanese yen, about 20% of Japan's GDP. The metropolitan area is the largest in the world. According to the survey results released in March 2021, it is the 7th largest financial center in the world.
