Tokyo is the capital city of Japan. 

It consists of 23 wards, Tama area and an island. 

It is located in the southwestern part of the Kanto region and has a long and narrow metropolitan area in the east and west and the eastern part faces Tokyo Bay.

Government agencies, financial institutions, large corporations, etc. are concentrated, and they play a central role in Japan from politics, business, culture, food, entertainment, fashion and education. 

It is also worldly famous for its nested transportation system of the railway. 

Population

It is an international metropolis with one of the largest populations in the world.

The population of Tokyo prefecture is about 14 million, and that of its metropolitan area 

including the surrounding prefectures (Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama) reaches about 35 million,

making it one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world.

Central Tokyo area was center of Japanese politics in the Edo period (1600-1868).  Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868.

Economy

As the center of the world's third largest economy, Tokyo occupies a large position not only in the Japanese economy but also in the world economy. Tokyo produces about 93 trillion Japanese yen, about 20% of Japan's GDP. The metropolitan area is the largest in the world. According to the survey results released in March 2021, it is the 7th largest financial center in the world.
