Description

Learn about the history and landmarks of Hiroshima and Miyajima island. Discover various aspects of this beautiful city, from the the somber history of the atomic bombing during WWII, to beautiful shrines and Japanese gardens.

In the morning, meet your guide at your hotel and depart for the Peace Memorial Museum. Take a deep dive into the history surrounding and resulting from the atomic bomb at this moving but enlightening museum and the Atomic Bomb Dome.

Next, switch gears and visit the peaceful Shukkeien Garden, or "miniature scenery garden," featuring a winding path through ponds, teahouses, and miniature vellys, mountains, and forests. It was destroyed just a few years after being opened to the public in the atomic bombing, but has been restored and remains a beautiul oasis.

For lunch, have a taste of one of Hiroshima's local delicacies, okonomiyaki. Unlike Osaka's version of the dish, in Hiroshima the cabbage, egg, flour, and other fillings are cooked in separate layers instead of all being cooked together like a big, savory pancake.

After lunch you will take a short train and ferry ride to Miyajima and spend a few hours exploring the scenic island. The most famous landmark is the beautiful Itsukushima Shrine, whose main torii gate stands on the edge of the Seto Inland Sea and appears to float during high tide. After spending some time here your guide will accompany you back to your hotel and end the tour.
